Saturday, December 8, 2007 - Metropolitan Community College's Certified Medication Aide Classes begin at the Fremont location.  The class ends Saturday, February 23, 2008.  The class will held Saturdays from 8:30 - 1:30.  The course is 5 credit hours and tuition cost is $230.00.

Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - Countdown to College Call-In Show.  Sponsored by EducationQuest.  This show will be on NET television Tuesday, December 11th at 7:00 P.M. During this one-hour program, experts in the areas of college planning, admissions and financial aid will answer questions on the air.  You can submit questions now by e-mailing questions to: countdown@educationquest.org or the evening of the show by calling 800-666-3721.

Wednesday, December 12, 2007 - 107.9 The Bull Radio is sponsoring "Team up with Tom" campaign.  This is an opportunity for a student to help 107.9 The Bull Sports Director Tom McMahon broadcast a basketball game.  To enter, students need to write a letter stating why they choose to be drug and alcohol free.  This is an excellent opportunity for an aspiring broadcaster. Thursday, January 3, 2008 - Metropolitan Community College's Certified Nursing Assistant Program begins.  Registration begins October 15th for the Winter session.  Classes begin January 3rd and end February 21st.  The class will be held Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings from 5:00 P.M. to 9:15 P.M. at 835 N. Broad Street in Fremont.  The cost for this 6 .5 credit hours class is $313.50.  The Nursing Assistant text and workbook is approximately $70.00.  White clothing and white shoes are required for the clinical portion of the class.  A watch with a second hand is needed the first day of class. 

Tuesday, January 29, 2008 - Northern Nebraska AHEC's Groundhog Shadowing Days for juniors and seniors.  This day is to provide hands-on activities, healthcare professionals information and job shadowing opportunities for students at a variety of health professionals organizations, clinics and offices throughout the Norfolk community.  Applications are available in the guidance office.  The deadline for applying is Tuesday, January 29, 2008.

Monday, January 30, 2008 - "Need Help Funding College?" is a program that will be presented by Mr. Daryle Urwiler.  The program will be at the Cuming County Courthouse beginning at 7:30 P.M.  The topics covered will be grants, loans, work study and scholarships.

Saturday, February 2, 2008 - College of St Mary's Scholarship Competition Day from 10:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M.  Students must apply to College of St. Mary to participate.  Students may register by going to www.csm.edu/Admissions/Scholarship_Day

Monday, February 11, 2008 - UN-K's 8th Annual Senior Day.

Sunday, February 17, 2008 - UN-L's Nebraska Sport Clubs Open Tryouts.  Nebraska Sport Clubs compete regionally against other colleges and universities.  http://crec.unl.edu/sportclubs  Tryouts will be held from 3:00 - 6:00 P.M.  Hockey will be from 2:00 - 6:00 P.M.  Tryouts will be held in the Nebraska Coliseum and Cook Pavilion in the Campus Recreation Center (14th and Vine Streets) Hockey tryouts will begin at the Ice Box (1800 State Fair Park Dr.)  There is no cost to tryout.

Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - The Howells GFWC Women's Club will provide the opportunity for two sophomores to attend the Sophomore Pilgrimage at the state capitol in Lincoln.  All sophomores are eligible for this event.  Applications were handed out to all sophomores Tuesday, January 29th.  The applications are due back to the guidance office by February 19th.

Friday, February 22, 2008 - Applications for the Junior Law Cadet Program are due in the guidance by this date.  This program provides an opportunity for students to learn about the role of law enforcement officers in the preservation of law and order in providing the service, security and protection required for the public welfare.

Friday, February 22, 2008 - Applications for Girls State are due in the guidance by this date.  Girls State will be held June 1-7, 2008 on the UN-L campus.  This program provides young women the opportunity to learn about the fundamental principles of American government through actual practice.

Friday, February 29, 2008 - Applications for Boys State are due in the guidance by this date.  Boys State will be held June 1-7, 2008 on the UN-L campus.  The purpose of this program is to educate students in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship and government.

Sunday, March 9, 2008 - UIN-L's Greek Preview Day.  Greek Preview Day is an opportunity for students to learn about individual fraternities and sororities, current Greek members and review teh recruitment process before it happens.

Saturday, March 22, 2008 - Central Community College will be hosting an ACT workshop beginning at 8:30 A.M. until 12:30 P.M.  The workshop will be held in the West Education Center Room 205.  The cost is $30.00 which includes handouts and refreshments.  The deadline for registering is Friday, March 14, 2008.  Applications are available in the guidance office.

Friday, March 28, 2008 - KOLN/KGIN 10/11 are sponsoring the Golden Apple Award.  This award is to recognize a teacher who has made a positive impression on a student during their elementary, junior high or high school years.  The nomination letter must include a description why this particular teacher meant so much to them, as well as describe how the teacher helped them.  The letter must also have the student's name, high school, school address, school phone number, teacher's name, and the teacher's current address.  Letter should be sent to 10/11 Golden Apple Award, KOLN/KGIN TV, 40th & W St., Lincoln, NE  68503. 

Saturday, March 29, 2008 - Northeast Community  College will be hosting an ACT workshop beginning at 8:30 A.M. until 12:30 P.M.  The workshop will be held at the Life Long Learning Center.  The cost is $25.00 which includes handouts and refreshments.  Pre-register by call NECC (402) 844-7000 or 800-348-9033 ext. 7000.  Seating is limited.  Applications are available in the guidance office.

Monday, March 31, 2008 - Sophomore Pilgrimage to the state capitol.  This opportunity is provided by the Howells Woman's Club.  Each sophomore is eligible to attend.  Forms are handed out to the sophomores and the Woman's Club select the students from the application sheets that they hand in.  Deadline for applying is Tuesday, February 19, 2008.

Friday, April 18, 2008 - Northeast Community College will host their Second Annual Drama, Deadlines, and Debate Day.  The day is for students interested in theatre, speech or journalism.

Tuesday, April 22, 2008 - Medical Explorers will present Chiropractice Medicine at the Fremont Area Medical Center Health Park Plaza 2A/2/B.  The presentation begins at 7:00 P.M. and concludes at 8:30 P.M.  This is the last Medical Explorers meeting of the year.  A summer program will be offered in Fremont from June 9-13 and Norfolk June 23-26.  For more information go the Medical Explorers website, www.nnahec.org

Sunday, May 4, 2008 - Southeast Community College Milford Campus will host an open house from 11:00 A.M. - 4:00 P.M.  See details at www.southeast.edu

Friday, May 16, 2008 - Breakfast for Champions sponsored by the Nebraska Alumni Association.  Howells is allowed one 8th grade student to attend.  The selection is judged on scholarship, leadership, and service to school and community.  All 8th grade students will receive an application for the Breakfast for Champions.  The winning student will be recognized at a breakfast at the Bob Devany Center and will have the opportunity to meet past and present Olympians, Husker legends and academic champions.  Each student will receive a Gold Medal of Achievement.  Applications are due in the guidance office by Wednesday, March 5, 2008.

Sunday - Saturday, June 1 - 7, 2008 - These are the dates for the American Legion Auxiliary's "Cornhusker Girls State".  Applications are available in the guidance office.  The deadline for applying is Tuesday, February 19, 2008.

Sunday - Saturday, June 1 - 7, 2008 - These are the dates for the American Legion's "Cornhusker Boys State".  Applications are available in the guidance office.  The deadline for applying is Friday, February 29, 2008.

Monday - Friday, June 9-13, 2008 - Northern Nebraska Area Health Education Center will be hosting Summer Health Careers Camps at Fremont and Norfolk.  The Fremont camp is Monday, June 9 - Friday, June 13, 2008.  The Norfolk camp will be from Monday, June 23 - Thursday, June 26, 2008.  The camps are open to grades 9 -12 including this year's 8th graders and graduating seniors.  Applications are available in the guidance office or at AHEC website www.nnahec.org  A $25.00 camp reservation fee is due upon notification of acceptance.  Scholarships are available.  Applications are due by Friday, May 9, 2008.

Thursday & Friday, June 12 & 13, 2008 - Southeast Community College will host an Automotive Summer Camp. at Milford Campus.  This camp is open to students 16 years of age and older.   This is an opportunity for students to experience what it would be like to pursue a career in the automotive field.  The deadline for applying is May 9, 2008.  The cost is $10.00.  To register contact Rich Morphew at 800 933-7223 ext. 8317 or rmorphew@southeast.edu

June 15 - 21, 2008 - UN-L's College of Architecture's summer workshop.  This workshop is designed for high school age students who have completed two or more years of high school and who are interested in pursuing Architecture, Landscape Architecture or Interior Design.  The workshop has space for 24 students.  The cost is $585.00.  Applications are available in the guidance office.  Deadline for applying is Friday, April 4, 2008.

July 13 - 17, 2008 - The 2008 Nebraska Agricultural Youth Institute will be held at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln's Kaufman Center. This five-day event brings together high school juniors and seniors from across the state to help build leadership skills, explore new aspects of agriculture, and encourage young people to become more involved with and remind in agriculture.  All meals, lodging and activities are sponsored by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture.  The only expense for the student is transportation to and from the institute.  Applications are available in the guidance office.  The deadline for applying is Tuesday, April 15, 2008. 

July 14 - 18, 2008 - Nebraska Rural Electric Association will sponsor Rural Electric Youth Energy Camp at the Nebraska National Forest at Halsey, Nebraska.  Cuming County Public Power, Stanton County Public Power and  Cornhusker Public Power are the area sponsors for the Youth Energy Camp.  Application are available in the guidance office and principal's office.  The applications are due by May 1, 2008.

July 22 - 23, 2008 - Central Community College - Hastings Campus will be hosting a one day event (may attend either day) for students grades 7-12 who are interested in the transportation fields.  There is a capacity of 20 students per day.

July 29 - August 1, 2008 - University of Nebraska Medical Center (UMNC) Youth Learning Center is holding their annual Summer Health Professions Career Workshop Tuesday, July 29 - Friday, August 1, 2008.  The workshop is for students entering their junior year, who have a minimum GPA of 3.0, and who have an interest in the health professions.  The cost of the program is $250.00 which includes: breakfast, lunch and snacks while on the UNMC Campus during the day, program costs and fees, transportation while in Omaha, and chaperone and dorm room expenses.  Applications are available in the guidance office and are due to UNMC by June 2, 2008.
